Veil Nebula

This image is part of the Eastern Veil Nebula, or NGC 6992, and it was obtained using the Wide Field Camera on the Isaac Newton Telescope. It is a three-colour composite made from data collected using filters to isolate the light emitted by hydrogen alpha (H-alpha), doubly ionised oxygen (OIII) and ionised sulfur (SII) atoms, and coded in the image as red, green and blue respectively. Credit: D. López (IAC).

The Veil Nebula is part of the Cygnus Loop which comprises several NGC objects. Shown here is NGC 6992 in the Eastern Veil. The Veil Nebula is a faint supernova remnant that exploded some 5000 years ago, and since then it has been expanding on the sky to cover some 3 degrees. Its fine and intrincated filaments are attributed to a thin shock wave propagating into space and seen edge-on.

This image was obtained and processed by members of the IAC astrophotography group (A. Oscoz, D. López, P. Rodríguez-Gil and L. Chinarro).

A manual for a meal!!!

La Palma is a land of new experiments for me…

Why not to have a Cooking experience. I thought…

This is something mix from different ideas I have on cooking, I don’t know such a meal exists or not?

But it was good. I just prepared it and now for case history!! I write it down a manual,

As it is common in observational cosmologist society, to write a manual :

Ingredients: (for one plate)

  1. 50 gram butter
  2. 5 mushrooms
  3. ¼ of a sweet green pepper
  4. 3 full-spoons green beans
  5. 3 full-spoon corn
  6. 3 full-spoon of small pieces carrots
  7. 3 slices of jambon
  8. 4-5 slices of cheese
  9. 4 spoon full crème
  10. Salt
  11. Garlic powder
  12. 2-toased t bread

So all it takes a 10 minute maximum. First we put the butter in pan and put it on a very low volume cooker, then we add mushrooms and sweet green pepper.

This is because they take more time to be cooked.

After 2 minutes, you can add green beans, corn and carrots.

In this step you can use salt and garlic powder as much as you like. (Other aromas can be used, but be careful, they can sometimes change all the taste.)

After 2 minutes, it is time to put the crème on. Solid crèmes are better.

Now you can put the slice of jombons after the crème starts to boil (Do not forget the low heat)

Once more add the salt and garlic,

And after 1 minute you can add the cheese, meanwhile you put the breads in toast maker.

When the breads are ready, the food is ready too.

You can enjoy it.

Please send your comments and improvements to the manual, As observational astronomiest

Add their comments on each written manual.

El Gran Diseno in Santa Cruz De La Palma

There are many bookshops in Santa Cruz de La Palma.
Comparing to the population and the area, this is great. The more exciting part is that the bookshops are really up to date. Just for example the one with nice big window shop put a poster of Liosa, announcing that he won the 2010 Nobel prize and put his books on shelfs.
But the most astonishing up to date is the Spanish translation of Hawking's latest book the Great design.
I could not resist the temptation and now I have it in my desk.
El GRAN DISENO,
maybe this helps to learn Spanish...

But I love a city with book shops even selling books in a language you do not understand.

Jane Austin

Jane Austen as portrayed by Anne Hathaway in Becoming Jane (2007)

Today 16 December is Jane Austin’s birthday, that is why Google change his logo for 235 anniversary of one of the most readable authors of England. Austin with her famous novels of Pride and Prejudice,

Sense and Sensibility, Emma is a breakthrough in English 19 century literature.

Her works can be categorized as romantic pieces of her time, although there are many realistic views in them. Austin was the 7th of eight children in her family but well educated mainly at home.

She died when she was just 41. But her literature undoubtedly becomes one of the outstanding pieces of world literature and a great describer of womens,

A lady's imagination is very rapid; it jumps from admiration to love, from love to matrimony in a moment. J.A.

Student day in Iran and Spitak in Armenia

Today 7 December is the memorial day of Armenian Spitak city(Means white) earthquake happened in 1988 was a tremor with a magnitude of 6.9 at 11:41 local time. The earthquake killed at least 25,000 people and also

،Today is 16 Azar (7 December )the Iranian Student Day . A meaningful day for us since 1953 ...

For Spitak a sculpture and for 16 Azar a rhyme from Iranian poet Shamloo in Papier

Frederic Sogoyan, an Armenian sculptor created this gift from the Armenian people to commemorate American Red Cross relief services to survivors of the 1988 earthquake that devastated their country.

Shipping a telescope

pic: from wikipedia The old dom of INH in Royal Greenwich Observatory, Herstmonceux Castle, England (1967-1979)
Pic: INT on the right (c) Sh.B.
pic:INT control room.

The Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) is a 2.54 m optical telescope in Roque de las Muchachos observatory where the most of my observation time must be passed and learn every detail of it.

The interesting thing about the INT is that it is started its work in 1967 in Sussex England in the main observatory site of Greenwich , where because of light pollution and improper position of it is shipped to La Palma!!! It was shipped in 1979 where is not in use till 1984, where it is received its second light.

Maybe the INT is the one rare telescope that had two opening ceremonies and two first light.

In the above you will find couple of pictures from INT.

In ... William Herschel Telescope

Great!!!

Now I am writing from William Herschel Telescope(WHT) (4.2 meter teescope) control room, in 1 December 2010. 4:00 pm local time

It is great, fascinating.

Today I came up with Ovid as support astronomer.

The impressions are good. As support astronomer first we read the scientific proposal of Today’s night in general to have a clue (It is better to read it before, because the preparation of Telescope is a priority)

Then, we read the technical part of the proposal where we must figure out the instruments, filter or gratings (in the case of spectrograph).

What we must down is to change one filter in one of the wheels of ACAM , imaging camera of WHT.

Where with a great care as a surgeons!!! We exchange it as Ovid sais each one costs 1000Euros,

Then we go up to Telescope Operating Computers,

Check everything related to camera, mirror and even have a spectrum of light from a spectroscopy lamp.

Check that CCD did not saturate and also chose the readout speed of CCDs,

All this done by Instrument control Console PINK window.

The WHT is ready for observers

It is GREAT…Each night in WHT costs 10000 euros, so Good Luck to observers

I go back to check all my note to not miss a detail…
