Intermediate Dispersion Spectrograph (IDS)

pic: IDS in INT (c) http://www.ing.iac.es

It is very interesting; today I am going to Isaac Newton Observatory.

Tonight is the last night which a spectrograph is installed on INT for a season, after this night they will change it to wide field camera. So it is the last chance to see it!!!

The intermediate dispersion spectrograph, (IDS) is a long-slit spectrograph which sits at the Cassegrain Focal station of the 2.5m Isaac Newton Telescope and is equipped with two cameras, called the 235mm and 500mm Cameras according to their respective focal lengths. The dispersion type spectrographs are used to disperse the upcoming light to wavelengths which are used to study the spectra and absorptions lines of light source, and extract physics out of it. Tonight’s observer’s proposal is the study of

The spectra of O type hot sub dwarfs to extract the chemical abundances specially the atmospheric helium.

Let’s see…
